Objects carry meaning, evoke emotions, and stir memory. Marie Anthony explores the still-life tradition through a curated group of objects—each of which possesses a strong aesthetic attraction, a potent association, or sentimental value for Anthony. The Boston-based artist, who works in oil paint, printmaking, and mixed media, looks for ways to spark emotion within each series.

Anthony creates her own visual language—one that speaks of a pictorial plane with little adherence to the laws of gravity, perspective, light and shadow, naturalistic color, or dimensionality. Objects are superimposed, multiplied, and hybridized with both familiarity and mystery.

Marie Anthony received her MFA from Tufts in 2016, after having studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the College of the Holy Cross. She currently lives in Newton, MA, and maintains her art studio in Boston’s SoWa Art + Design District.
